HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow who will be responsible for developing and supervising research projects and investigating the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems.

This position will be in support of the Deployment Associated Infections Division, Operationally Relevant Infections Department at the Naval Medical Research Command to provide scientific support to the Immunology Branch. The Immunology Branch evaluates products under development for combating antimicrobial resistant enteric infections. The Branch establishes and utilizes techniques and methodologies, including preclinical enteric animal models to serve as tools, and supports a number of products under clinical evaluation. The Immunology Branch aids in identifying vaccine targets, developing new ways to fight diarrheal diseases caused by bacteria, as well as supports a number of products under clinical evaluation, such as immune prophylactic strategies. As a member of the Deployment Associated Infections Division, the incumbent will work directly under the programmatic and scientific supervision of the principal investigators (Dr. Dilara Islam and Dr. Frederic Poly (Department Head, ORI)) to develop, conduct and manage research projects targeting interventions like vaccines and immunoprophylactic products for the prevention of diarrhea caused by bacterial enteropathogens including Campylobacter jejuni and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). The candidate will investigate the feasibility of applying a wide variety of immunological and microbiological scientific principles and concepts to products under development.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement studies on effective interventions such as immunotherapeutic strategies against enteric pathogens.
  • Design and conduct preclinical mouse studies to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and safety of product candidates.
  • Performing cellular and humoral immunology assays to characterize inflammatory and immune responses to vaccination, infection and product treatment in animal and human specimens, including ELISA, ELISPOT and T cell and B cell multiparametric flow cytometry.
  • Performing or supporting the written or oral presentation of data and writing of funding applications.
  • Collects and handles samples. Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards. Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks. Performs data entry for research projects and maintains databases.
  • Interacts and communicates with colleagues and collaborators. Coordinates with other technical and professional staff.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Doctoral Degree in a scientific discipline required.
  • Minimum of 0-5 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data.
  • Experience with animal work.
  • Strong background in immunology and experience working with enteric disease is preferred.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $47,600-$71,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
