We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Pathologists' Assistant (PA) to join our dynamic healthcare team. *Job Summary*
The Pathologists' Assistant (PA) is a highly skilled medical professional who provides essential anatomic pathology services under the direction and supervision of a pathologist. The PA is responsible for the gross examination and dissection of anatomic specimens, including surgical and autopsy tissues, contributing to the overall efficiency, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness of the pathology practice. This role requires a high level of precision, technical skill, and strict adherence to safety and compliance standards.
*Key Responsibilities*
*I. Specimen Handling and Gross Examination (Surgical Pathology)*
* *Gross Examination and Dissection:* Perform gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens, ensuring accurate measurement and optimal sampling of tissues for diagnosis and staging.
* *Specimen Preparation:* Prepare tissues for microscopic examination, including selecting, trimming, and processing specimens according to established protocols. Assist the pathologist during intra-operative consultations by preparing frozen sections, slides, and rapid smears.
* *Documentation and Triage:* Accurately document findings, including obtaining clinical history, describing gross anatomic features, measurements, and any special procedures performed.
* *Special Studies:* Select and prepare biological specimens for ancillary studies such as flow cytometry, molecular studies, and immunohistochemistry.
* *Logistics and Identification:* Ensure appropriate specimen accessioning and identification from hospital and office sources.
*II. Autopsy Performance (Postmortem Examinations)*
* *Authorization and Preparation:* Ascertain proper legal authorization for autopsy. Retrieve and review the patient's medical chart and other pertinent data with the attending pathologist.
* *Procedure:* Perform comprehensive postmortem examinations, including external and internal examination, dissection, and dictation/recording of data such as organ weights and gross anatomic findings.
* *Sampling:* Select, prepare, and submit appropriate gross tissue sections for special studies and microscopic analysis. Obtain blood, tissue, and other material for specialized studies.
*III. Laboratory Operations and Administration*
* *Laboratory Coordination:* Work closely with pathology laboratory staff to ensure the efficient processing, labeling, storage, and transfer of specimens.
* *Quality Control and Compliance:* Participate in quality assurance programs and quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results. Identify and report discrepancies. Adhere to all safety protocols and maintain compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations, including HIPAA and OSHA standards.
* *Protocols and Records:* Perform duties related to the administrative maintenance of surgical and anatomic pathology protocols. Assist in developing standardized protocols for gross descriptions and processing.
* *Equipment:* Assure proper maintenance of equipment and provision of adequate supplies in the surgical pathology area.
*IV. Communication, Mentorship, and Education*
* *Communication:* Communicate effectively with pathologists, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate and timely reporting of findings.
* *Mentorship and Training:* Assist with training and teaching of students and grossing technicians in complicated cases. Instruct pathologists and histotechnologists to improve tissue preparation for histologic processing.
* *Continuing Education:* Stay current with advancements in pathology and laboratory techniques through ongoing professional development and attendance at appropriate local, regional, and national meetings/conferences.
*Qualifications*
* *Education:* Bachelor of Science or Master’s Pathologists’ Assistant from a NAACLS accredited program.
* *Certification:* Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as a Pathologists’ Assistant (PA).
* *Experience:* At least 1-2 years of experience in a pathology laboratory setting, including experience with surgical and autopsy pathology. New graduates with relevant training may also be considered.
*Required Skills*
* Proficient in gross examination and dissection techniques.
* Strong knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and laboratory procedures.
* Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
* Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
* Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS), electronic medical records (EMR), and use of medical dictation software.
