Job Description

Position Title: Maritime Environmental, Health and Safety Coordinator

Location: Conley Container Terminal, 700 Summer Street, Boston, MA. 02127

Anticipated start date: 1-2 Weeks

Duration: 03 Months contract

Shift: M-F 7-3 ideal, but open to 9-5 at latest start and end time.

Must have a current TWIC, or be able to complete TWIC process

Job Description

Purpose: Assists in furthering a positive safety culture and aiding in compliance with all applicable EHS regulations for Massports Maritime departments.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Supports and enforces safety procedures across the container terminal, cruise terminal, and other maritime properties.
  • Maintains compliance with Massport, State, and Federal safety regulations including OSHA, NEC, ANSI, and Coast Guard standards.
  • Conducts regular field audits and inspections to identify hazards and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
  • Enforces terminal safety rules and ensures real-time hazard mitigation for all personnel on site (ILA, MPA, CBP, contractors, etc.).
  • Participates in the development and execution of emergency response plans and drills.
  • Collaborates with the Massport Safety Department to implement and maintain safety programs.
  • Develops and delivers safety training programs for terminal personnel and contractors.
  • Assists with designing and updating safety procedures, policies, and SOPs for marine terminal operations.
  • Tracks training completion and ensures compliance with regulatory and contractual requirements.
  • Assists in the investigation of incidents and supports corrective action planning.
  • Aids in root cause analysis for injuries, near misses, and safety violations.
  • Ensures proper incident documentation and reporting.
  • Communicates findings and recommendations to relevant departments.
  • Tracks corrective actions to closure and monitors for recurrence.
  • Aids in environmental compliance and supports pollution prevention efforts.
  • Assists with hazardous waste management and permitting (e.g., petroleum delivery, fluid transfer).
  • Coordinates inspections of separators, tanks, and vapor recovery systems.
  • Maintains inspection logs and collaborates with Environmental Management on innovative waste minimization strategies.
  • Assists in emergency response and security planning.
  • Collaborates with Public Safety and internal stakeholders to support emergency preparedness across marine facilities.
  • Participates in drills and planning sessions to ensure readiness and compliance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in safety, Marine Safety, Environmental Protection, facilities management or related field preferred.

Experience

  • 0-5 years of experience in an industrial setting and a familiarity with safety principles preferred. Experience with union workforce preferred

Skills And Competencies

  • Working knowledge of industrial safety including personal protective equipment (PPE), hazard recognition, work planning and general heavy equipment safety.
  • Current and valid Drivers License
  • proficient in Microsoft applications including (outlook, excel, PowerPoint).
  • Self-motivated and eager to solve problems with guidance.
  • Organized and able to extrapolate data in excel.
  • Ability to pass a Massport controlled substance test and background security checks.

Working Conditions

  • Environmental Parameters
  • Ability to work in an office and to travel to all Massport Maritime facilities.
  • Ability to work in an environment with conditions which may include: fumes, odors, gases, chemicals, and dust as well as decibels in the range of 65 - 100; and in all weather conditions (hot, cold, humid, dry, and wet). Ability to work in or on all MPA vehicles.
  • Physical Demands Strength: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Type: Stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling. Reaching, handling, fingering, and/or feeling. Good hearing to monitor radio equipment.
  • Clarity of vision beyond 20 feet. Ability to discriminate colors for equipment.

Work Schedule

40 hour work week. Ability to work additional hours as workload demands.
